Does Fido Need a Flu Shot? H3N8 flu, also known as Canine influenza (CIV), is a highly contagious virus that is unique to the canine population. Discovered in 2004, dogs lack any preexisting immunity to this new disease. Dogs of any age or breed are susceptible to infection. The symptoms are similar to human influenza. The virus attacks the respiratory system, which may result in coughing, respiratory distress, nasal discharge and fever. The virus spreads either by direct contact with infected dogs and their respiratory secretions or contact with contaminated objects. Humans moving between healthy and infected dogs may also spread the virus. It is most likely to spread in facilities where dogs are housed together. Shelters, boarding kennels, doggie day care and even dog parks are all places where your dog may come into contact with the virus. H3N8 impacts dogs and no single case of human infection with the canine influenza virus has been reported. However, the American Center for Disease Control has warned that the nature of the new influenza virus is such that it does not rule it out as a possibility. Unlike human influenza, which tends to be seasonal, CIV is a year-round virus and has been documented in 30 states and Washington, DC. It is most prevalent in communities in CO, FL, NY and PA. In May 2009, the USDA approved the first influenza vaccine for dogs. Talk with your pet’s veterinarian to see if a flu shot is recommended for your Fido.
